san diego Maternity Session FAQs
Pregnancy is a powerful, emotional season, and your maternity session should feel just as intentional and supportive. These frequently asked questions are designed to help you feel prepared, confident, and relaxed as you plan your maternity photography experience.
All maternity sessions take place in my private Chula Vista studio or at select outdoor locations throughout San Diego County, depending on your vision. Each session is fully guided and customized, with comfort, beauty, and connection at the center of the experience.
When is the best time to schedule my maternity session?
The ideal time for a maternity session is typically between 32–36 weeks, when your belly is beautifully round and you’re still feeling relatively comfortable.
That said, every pregnancy is different. Some clients prefer earlier sessions around 28 weeks, while others choose to photograph closer to their due date. We’ll take your comfort, health, and personal preferences into account when scheduling your session.
Do you provide hair and makeup for maternity sessions?
Yes. Professional hair and makeup artistry is included in all maternity sessions.
This experience is designed to pamper you and help you feel confident and camera-ready. Our artists specialize in maternity sessions and understand how to enhance your natural beauty while keeping everything soft, flattering, and timeless.
What about my nails?
Neutral, soft nail colors photograph best and keep the focus on you. If you plan to wear multiple gowns, subtle tones are especially recommended. Bold colors or very long nails can be distracting in close-up portraits.
Do I need to bring my own maternity gowns or outfits?
No. My studio offers a well-stocked client closet with a wide range of maternity gowns in various styles, including:
- Glamour and editorial
- Casual and boho
- Minimal and timeless
- Implied nude options
Most gowns are one-size and designed to stretch comfortably. During your pre-session consultation, you’ll have time to browse and select what you’ll wear.
Recommended items to bring:
- Nude convertible or sticky bra
- Nude underwear (thong or seamless styles work best)
- Nude spandex shorts or shapewear
- Undergarments that match selected gowns
- High heels for long gowns
- Closed-toe shoes for outdoor sessions
Do I need to bring any props?
No props are required. The studio provides accessories such as jewelry, headpieces, hats, and styling elements.
If you have a sentimental item you’d like to include, you’re welcome to bring it.
Should I get a spray tan before my maternity session?
I recommend avoiding spray tans prior to your session. Some tans photograph unevenly or appear overly orange, which can detract from the final images.
If you’d like a sun-kissed look, our hair and makeup artist can help achieve a natural glow, and subtle tanning adjustments can always be added during professional retouching.
How should I prepare for my maternity session?
Maternity sessions can be physically demanding, so preparation is important.
Helpful tips:
- Eat a balanced meal with protein earlier in the day
- Stay well hydrated
- Rest your feet 1–2 hours before your session
- Schedule hair and makeup during this rest period
- Ensure partners and children eat beforehand
- Snacks and drinks are available at the studio, but bringing favorites—especially for children—is encouraged.
What should my partner and children wear?
Outfits should complement your look.
I recommend:
- Neutral or coordinated tones that align with your gown selections
- Styles that match the formality of your wardrobe
- Avoiding logos, bold patterns, or distracting prints
- Long pants instead of shorts to keep focus on posing and connection
During your consultation, we’ll discuss styling so everyone looks cohesive and polished.
