“Photography is a way of feeling, of touching, of loving. What you have caught on film is captured forever… It remembers little things, long after you have forgotten everything.”

San Diego Newborn Photography Session FAQs
Welcoming a newborn is a beautiful and overwhelming time, and choosing the right photographer is an important part of that journey. These frequently asked questions are designed to help you feel informed, confident, and at ease as you prepare for your newborn photography session.
All posed newborn sessions take place in my private Chula Vista studio, serving families throughout San Diego County. Each session is approached with patience, care, and an unwavering focus on safety, ensuring a calm, comfortable experience for both parents and baby.
Below, you’ll find answers to the most common questions about scheduling, safety, preparation, and what to expect during your newborn session.

Everything You Need to Know Before Your Newborn Photography Session

Why should I hire a professional newborn photographer?
Your newborn’s first portraits are a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and they require far more than a good camera. Professional newborn photography combines artistic vision, technical skill, and, most importantly, experience in safely handling and soothing newborns.
As a mother of four and a professional newborn photographer, I bring years of hands-on experience working with babies and families. Newborn safety is always my highest priority. Every pose is approached carefully, with your baby’s comfort and well-being guiding every step.
While anyone can take a snapshot, a trained newborn photographer understands lighting, posing, retouching, and how to create timeless images that become true heirlooms, not just cute pictures.
Where do newborn sessions take place?
Posed newborn sessions are held exclusively in my private Chula Vista studio, which is designed specifically for newborn photography.
Outdoor newborn sessions are offered on a limited basis and depend on weather and temperature. For safety reasons, babies may remain wrapped or clothed during outdoor sessions.
Do you offer in-home newborn sessions?
Yes. In-home sessions are lifestyle-focused and capture natural moments in your home. These sessions do not include studio props or posed images.
If you’re looking for classic, posed newborn portraits, a studio session is the best option.
Is my baby too old for newborn photos?
The ideal window for newborn photography is between 7–21 days old, when babies tend to sleep more deeply and curl naturally into womb-like poses.
That said, there is no strict cutoff. Some babies do better earlier, while others settle more easily later. Preemie babies are photographed based on gestational age and may be photographed as newborns closer to their due date.
Newborns are never turned away due to age—however, certain poses may not be possible as babies grow and become more alert.
What if my baby doesn’t sleep during the session?
Sleepy babies allow for more curled, posed images, but beautiful portraits can absolutely be created with awake babies as well.
If your baby is alert, we focus on wrapped poses, baskets, textures, and capturing eye contact and expression. Many parents treasure these images just as much.
With years of experience (and lots of patience), most babies eventually fall asleep during the session. I follow your baby’s cues and use gentle techniques to help them settle naturally.
Do I need to bring props or outfits?
No, everything is provided for you.
My studio is fully stocked with carefully curated wraps, outfits, blankets, bonnets, headbands, and handcrafted props. If you have a sentimental item you’d like included, you’re welcome to bring it.
When should I book my newborn session?
Newborn sessions are best booked during pregnancy, ideally in the second or early third trimester.
Your session is tentatively scheduled around your due date. Once your baby arrives, we finalize the session date. I reserve limited space each month to accommodate early or late arrivals.
Last-minute newborn sessions may be available but cannot be guaranteed.
What if my baby arrives early or late?
No worries — this is expected. I intentionally limit the number of newborn sessions I book each month to allow flexibility for early or late arrivals.
If you’ve reserved your spot, your session is secure regardless of timing.
How should I prepare for the newborn session?
Before arriving, try to feed and change your baby so they are relaxed and sleepy. However, breaks for feeding and changing are always welcome during the session.
Helpful preparation tips:
- Pack your diaper bag the night before
- Bring sentimental items (if desired)
- Dress comfortably and in layers
- Expect a warm studio environment (ideal for newborns)
What can I expect during the newborn session?
Posed newborn sessions typically last 2–3 hours, allowing time for feeding, soothing, and gentle transitions between poses.
Your baby’s comfort leads the session. We move slowly, allowing plenty of breaks as needed. Soft music plays in the studio, and parents are encouraged to relax and enjoy the experience.
Your baby’s safety and well-being are always the top priority.
What should parents wear if included in photos?
Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on connection and emotion. Skin-to-skin images are encouraged when you’re comfortable.
Moms are welcome to browse the client closet, and there’s no need to shop in advance. Bringing an extra outfit is recommended — accidents happen!
Anything else I should know?
There’s no need to stress. The studio is stocked with essentials like diapers and pacifiers just in case. If siblings are joining, bringing snacks or quiet activities can be helpful.
Most importantly: trust the process. Relaxed parents help babies relax, too — and that’s when the magic happens.

Say hello. Let's work together.
